Wegovy Pen

Medically reviewed by Dr Dan McNally.

The Wegovy pen delivers semaglutide once a week, at any time of day, with no fasting and no daily routine to protect. It is the most established semaglutide pathway in the UK and the one with the deepest trial evidence behind it.

Wegovy pen: what is it?

Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide: a peptide that mimics a hormone your body naturally produces to make you feel full, by interacting with Glucagon Like Peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptors. This feeds back to your brain, suppressing your appetite.

Injected under the skin, it releases slowly across the week, which is why one dose covers seven days and why levels stay steady rather than peaking and dropping.

It also slows gastric emptying, so meals stay with you longer. That is the mechanism behind both the fullness and the early nausea.

Dosing schedule

Wegovy pen is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week. There is no fasting window and no timing rules around meals, so you can take it whenever suits you.

Like all GLP-1 medication, the dose is increased gradually so your body has time to adjust. This is the single most effective way to keep early side effects manageable.

Here is the typical dosing schedule for Wegovy pen:

  1. Month 1: 0.25mg

  2. Month 2: 0.5mg

  3. Month 3: 1mg

  4. Month 4: 1.7mg

  5. Month 5+: 2.4mg

  6. If needed: 7.2mg

Wegovy pen needs to be kept refrigerated, so plan ahead if you are travelling. Use an insulated case with a cool pack and carry it in hand luggage.

Efficacy

In the STEP 1 trial, people taking semaglutide 2.4mg once weekly lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo. For someone weighing 90kg, that is around 13kg.

STEP 1 remains the deepest evidence base of any semaglutide dose, which is part of why the pen is the most established pathway in the UK.

Averages do not tell the whole story. Your own response depends on your starting point, your history with GLP-1 medication, and the habits you build alongside treatment.

Side Effects

Just as with any other medication, Wegovy pen comes with some side effects. Most side effects are mild and appear in the first weeks or after a dose increase. They usually settle without any change to your plan.

Contact your Emerald clinician if side effects stop you eating or drinking, or if you develop severe or persistent abdominal pain.

Availability and eligibility

The Wegovy pen is the most established semaglutide pathway in the UK, available on both NHS and private routes.

The Wegovy pen is available through Emerald from £59 per month, including your clinical review.

You may be eligible if:

  • Your BMI is 30 or above

  • Your BMI is 27 or above and you also have a weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes

  • You are already on a GLP-1 treatment and would benefit from switching

Eligibility is confirmed by an Emerald clinician after a full assessment of your medical history.

Is Wegovy pen right for you?

All the treatments Emerald offers work. The question is which one you can live with day to day.

What works well:

  • One action per week rather than a daily commitment

  • No fasting window and no timing rules around meals

  • The deepest trial evidence base of the semaglutide options

  • Available on both NHS and private pathways

What to weigh up:

  • Requires injecting, which is a barrier for some

  • Needs refrigeration, which complicates travel

  • Pen mechanics and needle disposal to manage

  • A missed week is more consequential than a missed day

This may suit you if:

  • A strict daily routine is hard for you to protect

  • You are comfortable with, or willing to learn, injecting

  • You want the option with the longest track record

  • You have fridge space and a predictable weekly rhythm

How it compares

Emerald offers more than one weekly injection. The main difference between them is the active ingredient and how much weight people lose on average.

What arrives, and what happens next

Once your assessment is reviewed and your treatment approved, your first delivery arrives in plain packaging with nothing on the outside that names the medication.

Your first delivery includes:

  • Your Wegovy pen, containing four weekly doses

  • Four disposable needles, one per injection

  • Sharps bin for safe disposal at home

  • Plan information leaflet with your dose schedule

From there, a UK clinician reviews you at each dose step rather than only at the start. You log your weight and doses in the Emerald app, and you can message the clinical team whenever something does not feel right.

Conclusion

The Wegovy pen asks for one action a week and nothing else. No fasting window, no daily routine to protect, and the longest track record of any semaglutide option in the UK.

Whichever form you choose, the medication is only part of it. Emerald pairs treatment with clinical review and habit work, because appetite generally returns to its previous pattern once treatment stops.

If you are not sure which is right for you, start the assessment and let a clinician confirm which options are safe and suitable.
